Two Years Long: Second Anniversary – Rome

It’s almost my third wedding anniversary and due to complications on the flat, I had hoped to spend a long weekend with my husband romantically painting our property. I know, right? But then nothing was really going to live up to our first and second. At about this time last year, we went to Rome

In just two and two bit days, I saw everything I wanted to see and bless the Husband, he went around it all with me. Day one was the colosseum, a few Piazzas, A few churches, Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese. Day two was the Vatican, a few more Piazzas (including revisiting Navona as it is a-mazing), some more churches and the river. Part day three (only the morning), a final church and a hidden obelisk I had no plans on seeing (I love obelisks).

I’ve tried to go for some of my more random images – especially of the colosseum – because everyone’s seen the stock images of Rome, right? Sigh, no amazing places for the third anniversary though, just a building site!

I usually take a handy Top Ten book on my holidays. For my second anniversary to Rome, I couldn’t find one and had to use a Frommer’s Day by Day. It did the same trick. I highly recommend either range of books for anyone travelling. They are both equally as fantastic at guiding you to the places you want to see once in country (I have never got lost once), they’re pocket friendly, have amazing maps and are really handy for using before travelling. I’ve never followed one of the actual routes in either range, but I have adapted them based on the book’s recommendations.

I love these handy books so much, I even bought an AA City Pack Guide simply because it was in a charity shop. It appears I’ll be booking a holiday to Vienna at some point! Maybe the 4th anniversary,

Eleven Memories of 2011

I was thinking up ideas for blog entries and from out of nowhere, I decided on Eleven Memories of 2011 and it’s companion blog, Twelve Things To Come – 2012.

Neither list is supposed to be all good or all bad. I’m aiming for a mixture. I could have opted for 11 things to be thankful for this year, or 12 things to look forward to, 11 things I wish hadn’t happened or 12 things I hope won’t happen! Instead, this is just a list of memories to remind me of the year.

  1. I created this blog purely for poetry, it soon evolved into the collection it now is. Thank you for everyone who has ever read any entry, made a comment or follow it. 🙂
  2. Finally, I went to Rome and saw everything I’ve spent years wanting to visit there.
  3. I fell in love with a digital SLR that I bought. I’m quite addicted to it.
  4. After buying my husband a telescope for Christmas in 2010, 2011 saw me seeing Jupiter, its spot and its moons. Wow.
  5. I bought a new house! And it took me two months to get it ready for renting!
  6. About April/May my husband learnt he was going to be made redundant in August. I spent a few months incredibly worried until he started a new job in July and he much prefers the new one!
  7. A television show that I would never normally watch introduced me to the amazing book series A Song of Ice and Fire.  I fell in love with the world created.
  8. A three year old projectile vomited on me and I didn’t panic. Or vomit myself.
  9. I visited a gym for the first time ever and jogged for 15 minutes straight which is a personal first. It didn’t become a regular occurrence.
  10. For the first time, I attempted to grow my own veg at home. It wasn’t a total success, but I am willing to try it again!
  11. I was lucky enough to visit Rhodes just before Easter and saw the amazing decorations in the old city, something not many tourists get to see. It was stunning!

How about you? Can you find 11 significant things from 2011?

What about 12 things to expect of 2012?

Happy New Year!

International Me!

I have stood in the sun of faraway Pharaohs,
And dined upon their fish, walked into their graves.

I have watched the bloodiest of deathly battles,
And seen the Gladiator fall upon his love.

I have stood on the summit where wisdom beats water,
And saw my childhood dreams play out in the stars.

I often become lost in my own roads – of old and future,
And hobbled on cobbles back to this mind.

I have ascended as high as middle aged man,
And looked out across my assumed dominion.

I have slept on sand, partied by pools, and read a lot,
And have wished to simply travel – my runner up dream.

I have tottered up some Champs, shopping bags in tow,
Yet the tower of E remains unclimbed for now.

I have visited the homes of today’s worshipped Gods,
And seen the secrets inside a Mouse’s house.

I have gambled through the dark day inside a lit up tomb,
Only to have stripped in the blazing light of night.

I have been there for you always in an Empire State of mind,
And seen the beauty of concrete, the horrors of mankind.

I have many more to go, on my dream wish list,
Are there any you can think of, any that I have missed?
