Behind The Reasons

According to an online dictionary (thefreedictionary), a Muse is a guiding spirit, a source of inspiration or a poet. Or one of the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne.

Together, Zeus and Mnemosyne had nine daughters – the Muses – in Ancient Greek Mythology. They were named Calliope (epic poetry/song), Clio (history), Erato (erotic poetry/song), Euterpe (lyric poetry/song), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (sacred poetry/song), Terpsichore (choral dancing), Thalia (comedy) and Urania (astronomy).

People could easily assume that I am more inclined to Urania as the Muse of Astronomy as I am a scientist at my core. Or perhaps Clio for my love of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. No one would consider my muse being Erato, Thalia or Terpsichore! That leaves the four poetry/song based Muses left to be my inspiration.

Zeus and his fellow Greek Gods are one source of my inspiration. This is where my name “Persephone” comes from. She was the daughter of Demeter, the Earth Goddess, and was kidnapped by Hades to the Underworld. Sadly, the earth suffered when Demeter was so distraught at the loss of her daughter, she stopped crops growing and plunged the earth into Winter. Turning to Zeus, Persephone was allowed to spend part of the year with Hades and part on earth with Demeter. This is how the Ancient Greeks perceived their seasons to have been created.

Poetry is all about perception and seeing through the words to what the poet feels deep inside. Not everyone sees the same things from the same arrangement of words. Some words may seem light and jovial, but may have been meant as dark and revealing.

I write poetry to reveal my inner thoughts.

Some are fluffy.

Some may be seen as insightful.

Most are the only true way to know what’s in my heart.

A far newer avenue for my creativity is a new found interest in photography. I have always loved taking pictures; they are far better than simple memory. Since purchasing an SLR camera my mind has been buzzing with different ideas of images and currently have a season one planned, images based upon themes of my current favourite book series and a Christmas collection… or three! Having already posted some images through flickr, I will now try and concentrate on specially created images.

Similar to poems, the images I create will not show the same thing to everyone who views it. It’s doubtful that they’ll show an insight into my heart, possibly just into my kinda crazy head!
